This insect had very large black pinchers on the front of its head. It was going in and out of the hole it dug in the ground. It was around 1 to 1 1/2" long.

Ive never seen anything like this before but It was real interesting watching it make this burrow.

 
Common in dry habitats.
These wasps (several species in the genus in Oregon) are usually pretty common in dry areas. At least one species gets even larger than this one!

Only if you directly harass it and make contact most people that get stung by solitary wasps either accidentally step on them or were trying to grab them.
