Nice Photos
Nice series of photos, Carla

Thanks for the
compliment on the photos.

I had thought it was Lucanus mazama (Common name given in the guide as Cottonwood Stag Beetle) so am wondering what makes it L placidus. The head features look much more like L mazama to me and the collection locality (Arizona) fits mazama better.

In looking at the photos of placidus I see that the mandibles have some "teeth" on them, but many of the photos of mazama have smooth mandibles, like my specimen. Also the shape of the front part of the head differs: in the photos of placidus the labrum(?) has a distinct projection in the middle whereas mazama is straight across with a flat front.

I'm a biologist but not an entomologist. Feel free to educate me, and thanks for helping with BugGuide.

I happened to get a female last night and will post photos of it.
