Brown caterpillar - Zanclognatha

Brown caterpillar - Zanclognatha
Olive Hill, Carter County, Kentucky, USA
July 14, 2016
Found in a bag of apples brought from my aunt's house. Not sure if it came from the apple tree, or if it was crawling along the ground and onto an apple before it was picked up. I believe it began pupating within a couple days after it was found. It enclosed itself within some dead leaves.

I agree with Grammazoo and thought this caterpillar looked similar . Steve Nanz is the Zanclognatha expert here and he moves these to species pretty often, so you will soon have a definite ID. Nice to have the study!

Zanclognatha cruralis or obscuripennis
I can't tell how to separate the two species but a high resolution image dorsal view of the abdominal segments might help. The diameter of the D1 pinacula is lager than D2 for cruralis. (1).

Thank you!
