The expert for South Dakota odonates on Odanata Central has identified this specimen as Aeshna umbrosa, Shadow Darner

 
I disagree
Abdominal spot pattern just doesn't seem right, nor the pattern and colour on what's visible of the face. I'm editor on OC for MB, SK and ND so can attest to editors being wrong once in awhile :-). I like Steve's suggestion of Blue-eyed darner.
