Flea Beetle - Psylliodes affinis

Flea Beetle - Psylliodes affinis
Richmond Hill, York Region, Ontario, Canada
July 11, 2007
Again, on Solanum dulcamara. These little beetles are doing a fairly decent job in riddling these noxious weeds with holes (though they still cannot compare with the more voracious Three-lined Potato Beetles).

Noxious weed?
... so just which noxious weed is "Solanum dulcamara"?

Woody Nightshade
It's a vine-like climbing plant that grows like crazy (even in a gravel pit, where I usually shoot these flea beetles). It is a toxic species with attractive-looking, red berries which are very poisonous. When any part of this plant is broken, a bitter, nutty-smelling juice is exuded (hence this plant is also known as Bitter Nightshade). Here is an image of the plant, minus the beetle infestation, of course ;-)
