Nymph.
This is a nymph, a male, and quite probably a true katydid as you suspect. The male subgenital plate looks suspiciously like an ovipositor:-)

Thanks! and forgive me for "over-doseing" you with Katydids-we seem to have quite a variety here! I am determined to figure out eventually which is which. LOL!

Katydid nymph
Lack of full wings indicates immature. Don't know much more, but think end of abdomen indicates sex. But I'm no expert, so you probably want to look at some katydid images to see if this is right and which you have.
