Fly - Apiocera - Male
Rovana 13 miles north of Bishop, Inyo County, California, USA
August 7, 2016
Size: approx 1 inch
Looks like a robber fly but strange scorpionlike abdomen. Hanging in my yard at 5,000 feet. Very easy to get closeup since they like to stay close and actually fly in to where I was. Bugguide ID came back and after reviewing genus info, I am amazed its a robber fly mimic, does not feed, and its a male with that strange bulbosity! Very cool, nature is amazing!
