Mating Pair - Danaus plexippus - male - female

Mating Pair - Danaus plexippus - Male Female
Lakeland, Polk County, Florida, USA
July 15, 2007
I was fortunate enough to find this pair flying around the back yard where the milkweek is. They landed long enough for this photo. Normally monarchs let me approach with ease, but this pair was quite wary. I know there are so many pictures of monarch already, but I couldn't resist another of such a lovely creature in a unique pose.

Thanks for posting.
It's good to have butterfly photos for every month they're out and about in your state. I have one more to go for California and hope you fill out Florida, where Monarch are supposed to be aloft year 'round.

(In the part of California where I live, there's been some controversary over whether or not Monarchs are year-round residents and, if so, if they're breeding during the winter. Well, now Bug Guide has photographic answers to these questions.)
