These were big ticks! I guess they are male and female? The gold "flames" are nice.

S. Cannon is correct
These are A. maculatum. Note the elongate mouthparts. If the magnification were higher, you would see that the second palpal segment (from the base) is greater than 2x the length of the third palpal segment. This is a good character for differentiating Amblyomma from most other NA genera, possibly excepting Bothriokroton/Aponomma. Such pretty ticks.

Dermacentor sp.
Don't know how to tell the species apart, but 'large' ticks like this are almost always in the genus Dermacentor. The mouthparts are also distinctive, when compared to Ixodes.
