Carabid - Dicaelus suffusus

Carabid - Dicaelus suffusus
Rustler Park, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
August 10, 2016
Size: 16 mm

Ignore previous comments on separation of species.
I collected the three species of Liodicaelus in Arizona this year and have become familiar with their distinguishing features using Ball's 1959 review. I collected suffusus near Rustler Park, and it is noticeably smaller than the other two Arizonan species I have.

D. (Liodicaelus) chermocki Ball, 1959 has only been recorded in the US from the Chiricahua and Huachuca mountains. It is similar to D. laevipennis in size and shape. It measures >18.6mm in legnth. It is different from the other two species by having flattened-over/non-bulging eyes, and by having extremely small elytral punctures.

D. (Liodicaelus) laevipennis LeConte, 1847 is widespread in Arizona. It measures >16.2mm in legnth and =/>7mm in width. Posterior margin of the clypeus is truncate (flat) medially.

D. (Liodicaelus) suffusus (Casey, 1913) has only been recorded in the US from the Chiricahua Mountains. It measures

Im glad to help
even if it comes in pieces. I uploaded a picture of chermocki. It's not the best, but it somewhat shows the diagnostic eyes.

I'm pretty sure this little guy is D. suffusus (Casey, 1913). It is smaller than the other two Liodicaelus in southern Arizona (maximum width

Thanks for checking and correcting
my entry. I notice that you left other AZ entries with the original species page. Can you tell me the difference?

For an unknown reason my comments are being cut short.
There are three Liodicaelus in AZ. D.chermocki is limited to the Chiricahuas and Huachucas. D.suffuses is limited to the Chiricahuas. D.laevipennis is widespread. D.suffusus is the smallest(length~16mm width
