Cecidomyiidae on Prairie Sage - Rhopalomyia

Cecidomyiidae on Prairie Sage - Rhopalomyia
W-14, gravel road ditch, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
August 16, 2016
Size: galls 2-3 mm
J van der Linden told me about lep larvae he collected on the swollen stems of Prairie Sage, Artemisia ludoviciana, so of course I had to go looking.
Batch rearing.

July 19, 2016: found some sage in a nearby road ditch and sure enough, swollen stems. As I was setting up the rearing container I did note that there were fuzzy galls on the back of leaves but for some reason did not separate them out even though I had run across these galls in 2006

August 14, 2016: (on or before) a live adult gall fly. Took a closer look at the sage in the container, separated out the fuzzy galls, and found one with a spent fly pupal case
August 16, 2016: a live fly

August 17, 2016: cut open each of 3 galls in a cluster , another adult fly
September 12, 2016: Dr. Gagné confirmed.
October 23, 2016: found 2 dead flies for a total of 5 adult flies and a spent pupa
