Pyrota akhurstiana? - Pyrota akhurstiana

Pyrota akhurstiana? - Pyrota akhurstiana
Columbus, Luna County, New Mexico, USA
August 16, 2016
Size: 27 mm
Driving on New Mexico State Road 9, near mile marker 99 (Coordinates: 31.808839, -107.463835), at 9:20 AM, I noticed many of these beetles that were crossing the road southern bound. I managed to capture 5 specimens using an aerial net; which was immediately covered in yellow stains. These beetles varied in length from 14-27 mm. The bug depicted here was the largest in the group. A female? I have seen similar flights in this area for the past couple of weeks.
