Looks like Polistes comanchus from poking around BugGuide. Can anyone confirm?
Found at a small pool in a mostly-dry alkaline stream.

. I agree with the susbspecies ID. The wings of navaojoe are darker, so are the bases of terga 2-4. Delighted to see this rarely photographed wasp on BG!

This is most likely
P. comanchus comanchus
, a new subspecies for BG.
P. comanchus navajoe
doesn't occur in this area as far as I know. I would wait for further confirmation though.
