Check out Variegated Fritillary
If wondering about, it is looking for a place to pupate. Host plants include violas, pansies, and passion vine.

Variegated Fritillary
Oh good... this is the one I thought, but the images I was finding had white stripes, not blue.

I think the bluish tinge is due to the white balance of the
camera and the marks are actually white. I own a Kodak that is notorious for bluing white color.

blue vs white stripes
My aunt in Goochland says the color is definitely blue. They had thousands out in the fields for a short time. Now they have thousands of the butterflies! :) maybe regional color differences based on feeding habits? Don't know - just wondering. The ID is correct.
