Unknown Wasp - Mutillid Mimic? - Hyptia
Withalacoochee State Forest, Sumter County, Florida, USA
July 17, 2007
Size: ~5-6 mm
These wasps were on a bush covered with mutillids. I think the texture and color of the head and thorax mimic the mutillids with which it was sharing its space. If you can assist in ID, I would love learning more about these wasps.
This wasp is amazingly similar to , but must be different since the head and "thread" are different colors.
Is it possible that these two are the same species but dimoprphic?

Apparent lack of multiple closed cells in forewing means genus Hyptia.

Evaniidae?
Looks like some sort of ensign wasp to me. I have no idea what species, but the attachment point of the petiole and the laterally-compressed abdomen are pretty distictive.

A new one
This is a new family to me. I have not seen these other pictures on BG. Thanks for a starting point. I was stumped.

They are parasites of egg masses (ootheca) of roaches, very helpful insects...
