Looking through Eric E's Field Guide to Insects of NA and then browsing through the pix on line here, I am wondering if this robber fly might be in the genus, Proctacanthus. Seemed large when photo'd, on a sandy dry trail edge of pine woods.

Yes
On the genus. Tougher call on the species. That is a very pale preterminal segment. May be a species I have not seen. Something close to P duryii but not quite the same.

Herschel,
Thank you very much for the prompt and helpful response.

I am grateful for all the info and help you provide so many BG'ers.

Jack
