Gnathium minimum? - Gnathium

Gnathium minimum? - Gnathium
NM State Rte-9, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA
August 30, 2016
Size: 5 mm
Collected by using a sweep net on flowering plants on the side of County Road A003 (NM State Rte-9), Anthony, NM 88021. Coordinates: 31.788962, -107.172924
I was puzzled by this beetle proboscis-like structure. A quick online search brought me to the publication Elongated mouthparts of nectar-feeding Meloidae by Wilhelmi, A.P. & Krenn where they discuss mouthparts of Nemognathini and state that "...in Nemognatha and Gnathium species, the elongated galeae enable nectar feeding."
