Caloptilia stigmatella? - Caloptilia

Caloptilia stigmatella? - Caloptilia
Hubbard Brook, Grafton County, New Hampshire, USA
July 6, 2016

I'm wondering
if this is an undescribed species. Terry Harrison didn't recognize it.

Really hard to say
Wing pattern can vary a lot within a species, so it could just be an atypical individual, or it might just happen to be a species Terry hasn't encountered in Illinois. Since this genus has never been revised, there's no good reference for IDing them; the only key I know of is in Forbes (1923), and that one is hard to use without having the specimen in hand. That said, there are certainly plenty of undescribed Caloptilia species around; I think I've reared three different undescribed species just this year (only one of them from New England though).

Thanks Charley
If I see this individual again I'll collect it
