Autocomments

It seems ridiculous to me that every image that gets tagged and moved generates an autocomment, except when moved from ID Request.
I think it would be nice to see something along the lines of "Moved to Moths" or "Moved to Frass" rather than "Moved from ID request".

When I frass multiple images of spider frass from ID request, I don't have the time to leave a comment on each image, and I still see images being moved from ID request by other editors to frass or guide pages without comment. Not to mention those who don't follow up on their own images to see if they have been moved without comment may be left clueless.

Frass and autocomments
It turns out it is quite easy to add autocomments when moving to Frass. This is easier than the #3 solution where email is sent but no comment is added.

I have added autocomment stamping when an image is moved from ID Request to Frass.

In the current system email notification is tied to comment addition. So if we want people to be notified by email when their image is moved out of ID Request, a comment will have to be added.

I look forward to a discussion of this (and any other site improvements) at the BugGuide Gathering on Saturday!

Better than before
Of course, frassing without autocommenting is a special case because the images can disappear without the contributor knowing about it. Whatever else is done, this latest is a good idea.

I would agree with Jeff, though, that exempting all moves to the guide from autocomments doesn't make sense. After all, the original complaint that led to autocommenting in the first place had to do with moving images from ID Request to the guide without notification.

There's also the issue of autocomments saying where the images are moved from rather than where they're moved to. Combine the two, and you get the following scenario:

Someone posts an image of Toxomerus marginatus to the Bees guide page. John Ascher moves it to ID Request. The contributor decides that it really looks like some kind of honeybee, so it gets moved to Apis mellifera.

What does the autocomment trail say? It shows John Ascher moved it from Bees. That's it. Taken at face value, it might lead one to think that John Ascher moved a syrphid to Apis mellifera!

My personal preference would be to have autocomments show destination, and to have my option 2a, where autocomments are generated whenever anyone but the original contributor moves an image from ID Request.

Image history
I think the above example is not representative; it is not common for people to move things to ID Request.

The history of an image's movement through BugGuide is a separate kind of data, I think. In the next version of the BugGuide code, I'd like to have this image history in a separate tab which is not displayed by default, or is at least displayed in a smaller font.

However, until then we only have the option of putting a comment on it (with the side-effect of sending email to subscribers to that image) or not. We have two people saying that we should bring back an autocomment when an image is moved out of ID Request. Any other commenters?

By the way, as far as the autocomment stamping from rather than to, I believe we are doing it the correct way, as long as comments of movements from ID Request are included. If you want to find out where the image was moved to last, just look at the page that you are on.

Thanks
John.

Why should ID Request autocommenting/email be treated any different than any other page to page move as in option 2: Old system. Image moved out of ID Request gets autocommented, email is sent.?

I second the Stricklands, and it will elimate whiners such as Bruce.
