Ironclad beetles in marching formation - Phellopsis obcordata

Ironclad beetles in marching formation - Phellopsis obcordata
Mt. Washington, Coos County, New Hampshire, USA
Size: 10 - 14 mm
I collected these beetles on several dates during my last weeklong trip to Mt. Washington in my
search for the extremely rare Pyth*o strict*us. Noticing a range of size and color difference among them I decided a group shot was called for to demonstrate their variability. With zopherids this is easy due to their super-cautious nature. They can remain defensively tucked for an hour or more. Even after untucking their legs and antennae they are inclined to study their situation before trying to go anywhere.
