Myrmex? - Myrmex chevrolatii

Myrmex? - Myrmex chevrolatii
Harms Woods Forest Preserve, Glenview, Cook County, Illinois, USA
July 16, 2007
Size: ~4.5mm
Saw this little "ant" walking around on a leaf but it just didn't look right. When we pointed the camera at it, we realized it had a great big schnozzle!

Seems likely
I had the same experience yesterday here in West Virginia!

Your image looks very much like the Myrmex image in Stephen Marshall's book. He says 4 of the 5 northeastern Antlike Weevil species are in Myrmex and the 5th is Oopterinus perforatus. I can't find any pics of the latter in books or on the web, but it seems to have a very different life history from Myrmex and may well look different too. (O. perforatus lives inside root galls on Oaks, Marshall says.)

Anyhow I think you're right. My money's on Myrmex, since your image looks so much like Stephen Marshall's Myrmex photo. Maybe someday we'll find an image of Oopterinus to eliminate that possibility.

Found a Similar Looking Weevil Today in an Oak Gall
I found an old gall (~15mm diameter) on an oak twig that had fallen in my yard. There was a small bore hole (less than1 mm) into the gall. Upon teasing it apart out popped a small ~5mm black weevil. I did not have access to a decent camera but I got some crappy pics by combining my iPhone and my 10X loupe to make an ad-hoc macro setup. If there is any interest I can post the pics but they are sub-standard. It looked a lot like these pics, including the white line down its side. Though its legs were far less hairy.

This is in Fairfax City, VA BTW...
