Capnobotes katydid? -
Capnobotes occidentalis
-
Stansbury mountains, Tooele County, Utah, USA
July 16, 2007
Size: 2+"
This was found on the same road as the gray katydid that I posted about. Other than the color I couldn't see any difference.

Moved from
Sooty Longwing
. I looked up a pdf document see
entomology.ifas.ufl.edu
that clearly states fuliginosus has only a grey form.

I am not sure...
I have checked out the hind wings. The gray type does have sooty black hind wings, but the green form has green hind wings instead of brown. They are all over the road in the foothills of the stansbury mountains; often within several steps of the other form. I can collect some specimens and get better photographs if you would like. I see them scavenging dead insects off of the road. Are these known to be carnivorous as well? Here is a picture of one that I came accross that was eating a male Anuroctonus phaiodactylus scorpion.

More shots and image of stages
are certainly welcome. I have read that some grasshoppers are carnivorous, I image that may be the case for katydids as well.

Capnobotes occidentalis?
These Utah individuals may be Capnobotes occidentalis, because C. fuliginosus as far as I know does not have a green form. The primary difference would be the hindwings, sooty black in C. fuliginosus and transparent brown in C. occidentalis.
