Lorquin's Admiral for California in July - Limenitis lorquini

Lorquin's Admiral for California in July - Limenitis lorquini
San Joaquin Marsh, Irvine, Orange County, California, USA
July 20, 2007
On butterfly bush, looking pretty shopworn.

Nice image of Lorquin's
Admiral. Saw some 'down there' last year, but always either flying high, or too far.
Always a reminder of Pierre Lorquin who became a collector for Boisduval (who named this butterfly), and for the Austrians Rudolf Felder & his father Cajetan. (By the way, the Felders named Apodemia mormo ).

Lorquin's holds a special place.
It was the first butterfly that posed for me, yielding some of my finest photos. I seem to have an affinity for these and tiger swallowtails, being able to get close to them and having them stick around while I shoot.

The opposite is true for mourning cloaks, orangetips, and giant swallowtails. Perhaps they smell my fear... (I definitely experience buck fever when shooting some new critters.)

The best OC place to shoot these admirals is Santiago Oaks Regional Park, with the Marsh a fairly close second.
