I always thought this one was Eristalis transversa but I now have doubts, Can you help?

Moved from Syrphini.

Syrphus
Syrphus ...... male.
Eristalis have the R4+5 vein strongly looped.
The yellow markings overlapping side margins on tergites 2, 3, and 4 and narrowing abruptly just before side margins, separate this from Eupeodes.

One quick way to usually rule out E. transversa is the lack of horizontal band across top of thorax.
