Hard-shell spider found on Maui

Hard-shell spider found on Maui
Hana highway, Maui, Hawaii, USA
May 29, 2007
Size: Dime Sized including legs
I found this spider along a scenic small bridge stop in a very narrow portion of the Hana Highway on Maui. Large Orb web, very accurate pattern. Almost looks like a hermit crab. Moved very slowly.

I saw one of these little beauties as I was crossing a wooden footbridge in Bermuda. When I first saw it, I thought it was a baby crab, and was astonished when I crouched down to better view it and realized it was weaving a web, so was obviously a spider! I saw a golden orb spider spinning its gorgeous golden web on the grounds of a library on the same trip - have never forgotten either experience.

looks like...
Gasteracantha cancriformis. The map doesn't seem to include Hawaii, but it's cool to know it's out there.

this is a kool spider indeed, is there anywhere i can get more information on it? i recently found one in my yard in a web stretched from a power line all the way down to a potted plant on the ground, i took pictures but as i am not a photographer they came out kinda fuzzy but still can make out what it is. btw i live in miami florida.

hermit crab looking spider
just found one in my back yard in Georgia!!

The color variation just in my own back yard is pretty extreme, going from white to almost orange. I have seen some red spikes, but never as pronounced or as red as these.

Here is a similar color variation from Florida.

hard shelled spider
Have several living in my cagged area pool. Does anyone know if they are poisonous? Mine have a white bottom with black dots but look exactly like the color picture just like the one from Bobby but I can't confirm the red. Do they have a name?

Kite Spider...
Hello Kay Way.
I started this chain several yers ago, and people are still amazed as I was about this spider. Nature is just amazing! From what I have heard, any spider that weaves a round web (Orb Weaver) is not poisonous to humans. I would not test this however with this spider as usually, anything in nature that is this beautiful signifies trouble. look up several links in the chain to Gasteracantha cancriformis and click the link...goes to a few more nice pictures. The web I saw was about 2 feet across and I walked almost straight into it ! cheers.
