Empty chrysalis? -
Danaus
Sugar Land, Fort Bend County, Texas, USA
September 21, 2016
I found this hanging under a fence board. There was another one nearby, though it was dark brown and maybe dark grey, with a similar spiral top.

Empty monarch chrysalis.
Looks like it belonged to a monarch or related butterfly.
It would have been a jade-green color when it first formed and for most of the time it was occupied...
...becoming transparent in the couple of days before the butterfly eclosed (emerged)...

Thanks...
But what about the white appearance? This one was white and the other one was dark brown (so neither were jade-green or clear). Also, neither where shiny (more of a matte, non-gloss)

Empty chrysalis
The empty chrysalises lose some of the glossiness (and all of the bright color) that they have when the developing butterfly is inside. They're kind of like a layer of skin that's sloughed off.
The empty monarch chrysalises I've seen have all looked basically like the one in your photo.
I don't know about the dark brown one; there may be some natural variation, and some diseased monarch chrysalises turn dark brown/black.

That helps
I appreciate your help. This looks like a positive ID. I did find some pictures at the below link that also look similar to my picture.

Could be.
Yes, it's a possibility.
They're closely related (same genus).
