Mourning Cloak - Nymphalis antiopa

Mourning Cloak - Nymphalis antiopa
West of Four Peaks, Maricopa County, Arizona, USA
March 8, 2005
Taking nectar from a flowering shrub adjacent to a stream in a desert canyon. I've not seen this species take nectar before. Temperature was pleasantly warm, about 80 F.

The shrub is Seep Willow, Baccharis salicifolia. This is not a willow at all, but a member of the Aster family. It is common along desert streams, even intermittent ones, and is a popular nectar plant for insects, blooming March to December. (See Bowers, Shrubs and Trees of the Southwest Deserts; Epple, Plants of Arizona.)
