I dared not pick it up for fe
I dared not pick it up for fear of being sprayed with a noxious chemical. I didn't know at the time whether that fear was warranted. I'm guessing femail E. goryi.

Yup, female E.goryi indeed...
Darkling beetle defense chemicals aren't that bad, as long as it doesn't get in your eyes or in a cut the only effect is has is making your hand smell weird. Some individuals are less likely to use it as others, so if you were to pick it up you may not even get sprayed, especially if you are gentle with it. :)
