Even though they prefer conifers, they are found on other vegetation.

This male is interesting in that he is particularly dark. Given your location of Michigan, I might have considered Tamarack tree cricket. But given he was pursuing an obvious Pine tree cricket female, I think it's safe to say this is a dark colored male Pine tree cricket.

Pine tree crickets are highly variable in the degree of rust color. There are extremely dark, almost black, pine tree crickets found in Colorado.
