Bombus on aster - Bombus affinis - Female
Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, Solon, Johnson County, Iowa, USA

Large bee on aster. Due to her size, I suspect she might be a queen but there are a number of bumbles with T1-2 yellow and I'm not sure how to tell them apart.

I think this is Bombus griseo
I think this is Bombus griseocollis, but not 100% sure.

Oh, wonderful! I was trying to go for the more common option but I'm very, very glad to have been wrong here. Should have paid more attention to the hind basitarsis *and T2*...

John is right - I missed the all yellow T2 fieldmark (in B. griseocollis only the anterior half is yellow).

I think we had all the shots we needed, but John may feel free to disagree...

In the future, should I come across a possible affinis queen again, do you have any tips for what would be good parts of the bee to focus on getting pics of (as useful as cell phone pics can be for detail work anyway)?
