Little Missouri National Gras
Little Missouri National Grassland, Near Summit Campground. Photographed 31 August 2002. Was with an entomologist surveying skippers who caught and ID'd it.

Hesperia
Just wondering how you eliminated Dakota Skipper,
H. dacotae
, for this one? Any addtional information you could provide with your photos, including how you identified them, habitat, date, and a specific location would be great as well.

Hesperia dacotae?
I was there. It is Hesperia comma assiniboia (or Hesperia assiniboia if you insist on splitting). The only other possibility at this location would be Hesperia leonardus pawnee (Pawnee skipper), which this definitely is not. The only records for Hesperia dacotae in the ND badlands are from considerably more mesic situations at Eagle Nest Butte (approximately 40 miles ENE of this situation) and eastern USDA "Pasture 12" near New Town, some 40 miles farther NE of that -- not to mention the fact that H. dacotae flies approximately two months before this picture was taken. There are several subtle "field marks" that would allow specific differentiation of individuals, but in this case it is unnecessary to consider them for the above reasons. -- Ron Royer
