Rich Forked Fungus Beetle harvest - Bolitotherus cornutus - male - female

Rich Forked Fungus Beetle harvest - Bolitotherus cornutus - Male Female
Jefferson Notch area, Coos County, New Hampshire, USA
May 5, 2007
Size: approx. 7 - 10 mm
I collected conks on all three trips I made to Jefferson Notch in May but most were from my May 5 trip so I have used that date. Most of the conks were old and cracked on their top surface and taken from birch and possibly other deciduous trees. I kept these in a large plastic tote with a fine mesh net overtop, intending to break them apart and see what sorts of arthropods might be inside. I finally got around to doing that last Friday and Sunday. Except for a few way dead ones and a couple I seriously maimed in the extrication process, these are all the adult Forked Fungus Beetles I found in my conks. As you can see, a number of them are rather recently eclosed and not yet darkened.

These were some of the many collateral benefits in my Forest Service-approved search for Py*tho str*ictus.
