Are winged ants always females?
Is this a Carpenter Ant?

 
This is a citronella ant.
So called because the workers, which are pale orangey yellow, let off citronellol when alarmed. Mostly subterranean, alarm can mean any sudden exposure to light. When digging in the garden, I often smell these before I see them. Queens, winged, black male, and worker all in one image here:
