Woodland Skipper (?) - Atalopedes campestris - female

Woodland Skipper (?) - Atalopedes campestris - Female
Cliffside Lane, The Ridge, Fair Oaks, Sacramento County, California, USA
October 4, 2016
Size: 3/4 inch
I was taking a walk around The Ridge, the gated community that I live in, when I noticed activity on some flowering plants. I decided to forego my walk and went and got my camera with 28-300 mm lens and began taking photos of various butterflies that came to feed on the flowers. The expected skipper at this location is the Woodland Skipper but the pattern on the wings doesn't readily match the photo in Jeffrey Glassberg's Butterflies Through Binoculars of the West. I understand that this is a species with a lot of variation which more than likely explains why my images don't match the photo in Glassberg's field guide.

Sachem female

Sachem female
Thank you for the ID, Cliff. I had overlooked this one as the range map in Glassberg's guide showed this species to be more coastal than the location that I took the photos in. This is also a lifer butterfly for me. More than likely I have observed this species before but had thought that I was seeing another Woodland Skipper.

It's nice to get a lifer, congrats
Butterflies of America shows several examples of this western subspecies campestris http://butterfliesofamerica.com/t/Atalopedes_a.htm
