Klamathweed beetle? - Chrysolina

Klamathweed beetle? - Chrysolina
Portland, Cumberland County, Maine, USA
July 12, 2007
Size: 1/4 inch
Maybe a Klamathweed beetle? Two of these coppery-colored beetles hung out for a week or so on (I think) St John's wort - yellow flower. They seemed rather sluggish. When touched, they immediately fell off, as if they were not really grasping the stalk.

Moved from Chrysolina.

Chrysolina hyperici - St. Johnswort Beetle
yes this is a species of Chrysolina, but as you found it on St John´s Wort I suspect it is hyperici - St. Johnswort Beetle
The beetles try to escape into the dark of the lush groundcover by dropping themselve and quickly hiding beneath something or by playing dead. It´s often hard to relocate them after they have fallen.

Thanks
Yes, that's exactly what they do! And then they can't be found.
