Serious thanks to Bill for noticing the difference between this fly and P. furcata and giving us a new BugGuide species!

Totally orange scutellum and
Totally orange scutellum and no marking between the central longtitudinal stripes and scutellum.
There is only one other specimen with totally orange scutellum and this too doesn't have the usual marking mentioned above. Perhaps these two features are diagnostic for Palpada texana.

Fascinating, I was wondering
Fascinating, I was wondering about the orange scutellum; it seems out of place. When I look at Hull's original description in 1925 (https://kb.osu.edu/dspace/handle/1811/2257) the markings on the thorax, the shape of the markings on T2, the color of the scutellum, and the yellow on the apical parts of the femur all match Palpada texana and *not* P. furcata, the only exception being the basal part of the second tarsi which should be yellowish in P. texana but brown in P. furcata.

FWIW, Hull's key uses the color of the scutellum to distinguish between P. texana ("Scutellum yellow, opaque") and P. furcata ("Scutellum black or brown... Scutellum wholly shining, dark brown or black, sometimes metallic").

Edit - yes, I see , which is also lacking the marking as you say, and also has the yellow on the femora, which seems absent on the P. furcata that I spot-checked. Apparently the geographic ranges are now fully overlapping, so we can't rely on them.
