narrow-necked beetle -
Cymatodera inornata
Ailsa Craig, Ontario, Canada
July 24, 2004
Size: about 7 mm
Came to porch light. An odd-looking individual with "legs growing out of its neck" - I'm stumped.

Cymatodera or Lecontella
Robin-
This is a checkered beetle (Cleridae), but I can't be sure of the genus. This critter resembles two very similar genera,
Cymatodera
and
Lecontella
but I can't place it for sure from the picture. I also was unable to make an inference given the locality- maybe you have some insight as to local faunal lists? If I had to guess, I'd go with the former name.
cheers,
zack

Cymatodera
Thanks Zack. I don't know of any local lists but the Checklist of Beetles of Canada and Alaska (
1
) has PDF docs for each family, giving species distribution by province/territory. There's no Lecontella species in Canada, and only 3 Cymatodera species in Ontario (bicolor, inornata, undulata). If Cedar Creek's image of
C. undulata
is correctly IDed, my specimen looks different than that, and mine has no reddish-yellow anterior and posterior margin on the pronotum, as described for C. bicolor on
this page
, so that leaves only C. inornata.

agreed
Assuming this isn't a new record for Ontario (a reasonably safe assumption, but not out of the question), I would agree that what you've got is
C. inornata
. We've got specimens of all three here and both of the other two have distinct bicolorous patterns clearly not visible in your photo.
Hmm. Clearly not visible- what an oxymoron!
Regardless, neat beetle.
cheers,
zack
