Gall - Cynipid Wasp - Andricus gigas - Andricus gigas - Female
San Jose/Alum Rock Park, Santa Clara County, California, USA
June 22, 2007
Size: 3.5 mm diameter
Summer-fall unisexual generation a.k.a. Saucer Gall (Wasp) on Blue Oak may be confused with those of Disc Gall Wasp (Andricus parmula) if not carefully examined. Species confirmed by Ron Russo, author of Field Guide to Plant Galls of California and Other Western States (ISBN 0520248864); see page 148.

A similar gall...
Joyce or Barry, since I know you both have Ron Russo's book, I wonder if you could take a look at the image below and see if these might be galls of A. parmula.

[edit] Oops, I see now that we already have a guide page for that species. Hmm. Well, I'm still not sure what to make of these galls, so please weigh in if you have any insights.

ok
I weighed in :)
