mantid - Tenodera sinensis - female

mantid - Tenodera sinensis - Female
Point Pelee National Park, Ontario, Canada
September 20, 2016
Adult female Tenodera sinensis? What is the currently-accepted scientific name for north American populations of T. sinensis? In other words, is this specimen Tenodera sinensis sinensis or Tenodera aridifolia sinensis? Any clarification would be much-appreciated.

Also, I recently submitted four Litaneutria specimens (observed in Arizona) and you identified them all as L. minor. I notice that there are OTHER Litaneutria species. How were you able to determine that my four were all L. minor (vs. L. obscura, etc.) How does one distinguish among the Litaneutria species?

Thank you once again for your generous help!

Thanks very much
for taking the time to share this nomenclature info metrioptera!

LOL...Where To Start
Look at the top of the page. That is the currently accepted taxonomy used in Bugguide. Prior to that we used T. aridifolia sinensis. Some university entomology departments still use that name. Example. The
Mantodea Species File lists it as Tenodera parasinensis.

Conclusion? Mantid taxonomy is a mess. Project Mantodea is an effort to correct these taxonomical shortcomings. This research should help clear up some of these questions.

As for Litaneutria, I'll address that on one of your Litaneutria images.

Many thanks for all of this great info John-
I was not aware of Project Mantodea so thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Your ongoing help is much appreciated!
