Saddleback Caterpillar Moth, cocoon - Acharia stimulea

Saddleback Caterpillar Moth, cocoon - Acharia stimulea
Shimek St Forest, Van Buren County, Iowa, USA
October 14, 2016
The white on the cocoon are bits of paper towel.

M. Leoschke says: "I collected the Saddleback caterpillar from the Farmington Unit of the Shimek State Forest in Van Buren County, Iowa on September 20, 2016. It was on a clump of fragrant sumac (Rhus aromatica) on a south/southwest-facing slope in an oak-hickory forest locally dominated by White Oak (Quercus alba) and Red Oak (Quercus rubra).

It was still a larva late on the morning of September 24th, but when I checked the bag about 6 p.m. I could not find it. When I searched all the branches in the bag I found the pupa."
