Explanation of Names
Originally called "Stenoptera", Greek for "narrow wing", the genus was renamed to Neostenoptera because Stenoptera was already in use.

This genus was originally discovered as a fossil copal inclusion in Africa. Later an extant species was found in Africa. Very recently, a third species was found in America.
