June 27, 2016: collected conical leaf galls on Jerusalem Artichoke, Helianthus tuberosus
July 8, 2016: found nearly dead adult gall fly and spent pupa mostly emerged from gall

Asteraceae
Leaves imply Vernonia, but it looks like they are opposite which would rule that out. I would guess a Helianthus or a closely related genus.

 
Helianthus
I agree that this is a species of Helianthus. The hairy stem suggests H. tuberosus. This and three other congeners (H. grosseserratus, H. rigidus, and H. annuus) have been identified in Sheeder Prairie Preserve in the past.

 
H. tuberosus
The second photo you just added shows the leaf with a rounded base and a winged petiole, good indicators of H. tuberosus.
