Is the shape of the forewing the best distinguishing characteristic?

 
Yes, partly
Glazed Pellicia has more pointed forewings without so much curve to them. The shape of the forewing postmedian band is also different, with it being shaped more like a number 7 (on the right wing, at least) on a Sickle-winged.

Skipper -- possibly the "Glazed Pellicia Skipper"
This is a skipper (in the same superfamily as butterflies).

It may be Pellicia arina, which is found in Texas, but I'm not certain.
