This specimen was collected from a vernal pool near the southern end of Carlisle Blvd., (Albuquerque East 7.5 minute quadrangle), Kirtland AFB, Bernalillo Co. NM. See Clam shrimp, live remarks for the main discussion of its environment and identification.

This specimen was stored in ETOH 95% for 3 years, then transferred to glycerin for several days. It is submerged in shallow glyercin for this image. This preserves colors and allows for a natural display of its legs and other extremities, which would otherwise be wetted down. Glycerin (like water) also renders the carapace transparent, although details within are blurred. The objective used does not correct for the glycerin's index of refraction, so spherical aberration also limits resolution.

This image is from a CombineZP processed stack of 17 images with uniform step taken with a Mitutoyo M Plan APO 5×/0.14 ∞/0 mm microscope objective + Nikon 135 mm F2.8 AIS telephoto lens + Nikon D810 camera (magnification 3.375×; technique described here).
