Clam shrimp telson, glycerin saturated - Eulimnadia geayi - female

Clam shrimp telson, glycerin saturated - Eulimnadia geayi - Female
Kirtland AFB, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, USA
July 31, 2013
Size: 8.4mm X 5.3mm Carapace
Download high resolution image here.

The specimen was removed from the glycerin entirely for this image and rinsed briefly with water. Much higher numerical aperature and magnification are now possible since spherical aberration due to the medium has been eliminated. Thin flexible structures such as the telson filaments and furca setae, though, are now wetted to the surface due to residual surface glycerin, and so not clearly visible.

This image is from a CombineZP processed stack of 170 images with a 2.7 µm step taken with a Mitutoyo BD Plan APO 20×/0.42 ∞/0 mm microscope objective + Nikon 200 mm F4 AIS telephoto lens + Nikon D810 camera (magnification 20×; technique described here).
