Size: 17 mm
This wasp was found in the afternoon, on a rotten log in an opening in an old forest, near a prairie/wetland remnant. Thanks for your help!

Female - Spider Wasp
This looks like a female Calopompilus pyrrhomelas. (western range) -- 10 flagellomeres and 6 abdominal segments = ♀

That was what I thought too. Had some this year. However, there have not been any ID'd in Washington State. Don't know how to find out about their range.

The other species clearly has been seen in Washington.

I enjoyed reading about Tarantula Hawks in the info provided by BG, that you suggested. To my untrained eye the wings in my image seem to match Calopompilus, Fascinating insects. Joy
