Tipula xanthostigma
This is an extremely likely candidate for T. (Yamatotipula) xanthostigma (Dietz, 1917). It is pretty much one of the only described species if Yamatipula that look like T. tricolor in that area.

- Flagellum of antennae not uniformly yellow; bicolored with bases of flagellar segments black and the remainder yellow
- Wing cell R5 darkened, not paled in comparison to surrounding cells; stigma yellow (see allied species for following characters)
- Wing with a conspicuous whitish crossband extending transversely from before the stigma to the discal cell
- Side of the thorax unmarked, distinguishes from T. subeluta and T. maculipleura
- Wings with more contrasting pattern, brightened in the longitudinal center of wing, veins yellow
- Abdomen with or without brown, longitudinal stripes on each side
- Thorax yellowish-gray to pale brown, abdomen sordid yellow
- Drawing of the wing (original description in here as well): https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/20201#page/188/mode/1up

Tipula
Hello Aaron. Any chance of this happy couple being ID'd to species? Any body that I might want to beg help of??? Sorry to bother. Steve

Large Crane Flies - Mating
What do you think about Tipula tricolor? A first for your state, if confirmed, congrats! You could add a link to both of the master images, since they are mating.

T tricolor
Methinks you are correct. I was a bit dubious at first because of apparent differences in wing pattern, but a substantial portion of that is attributable to the background color coming thru (my critters' wings are not against a white background). Also, from what I can tell, the male terminal abdominal structure fits the subgenus well. I did put in links (to the best of my abilities; at least gave URL for each other's mate). Good suggestion
