I don't know what you were thinking, but it immediately reminded me of this extremely variable Catocala that has always driven me crazy.

Seems to match some of the photos of that Catocala. I didn't have any ideas about the ID of this moth when I posted it.

If you really agree, move it to Catocala and Jason Roberts will see it there. He places most of the Catocalas.
