caliginosus or vosnesenskii (Bombus caliginosus or vosnesenskii) - Bombus

caliginosus or vosnesenskii (Bombus caliginosus or vosnesenskii) - Bombus
Rancho del Oso Nature Center, Santa Cruz County, California, USA
November 26, 2016
For starters, this looked dead until we tried to move it, then it got more animated. I moved it off the walkway onto a picnic bench, top temp was probably 58 degrees.
Then I noticed the tongue frozen out of the mouth, it was not moving in or out, then I noted a lot of things under the tongue sticking out. Any idea what was happening to this poor creature?
Sorry for photo quality, I'm getting use to a new camera.
Frass extra's as needed.

not sure but could be caliginosus
given locality and seemingly long face

USCS
Has recorded a lot of vosnesenskii in our area (RDO is about 14 miles to the north, they list that and californicus as the 2 on Campus.

things under tongue
What are those things sticking out under it's tongue. The tongue was out of it's mouth the whole time, then I noticed these 3-4 shorter long things from under the tongue sticking out too.
