Square-headed Wasp - Ectemnius cephalotes - female

Square-headed Wasp - Ectemnius cephalotes - Female
Seatac, King County, Washington, USA
July 28, 2007
Size: approx 15mm
I first thought it was a Be*ewol*f...It's head & abdomen are different, though.
Found on a rotten log in the morning at the park I was at.

Moved from Ectemnius.

Yes
A female of the genus Ectemnius, strongly reminding of Palaearctic E. cephalotes or E. lituratus. Obviously closely related to them and other species with sivery pubescence on lower face - other have a golden one.

Thanks so much!
I hadn't seen one of these before.

E. cephalotes.
I know E. cephalotes occurs in the eastern U.S., so it would not surprise me if it was out there now, too. Great image!

According to the Red Catalog,
available for free online, this species is not recorded W of Illinois. I have not checked more recent literature.
